Listening to Country: A Yarning Circle on First Nations Leadership in Climate Action

This yarning circle will create a safe and inclusive space within the Australian Pavilion, reflecting Indigenous approaches to dialogue, negotiation, and decision-making. Co-moderated by First Nations Australian leaders, the event will move beyond the traditional panel format to encourage open, values-led discussion grounded in reciprocity, respect, and collective learning.
The circle invites reflections from all participants (community, government, etc) encouraged by First Nations leaders. Through shared storytelling and exchange, the session will explore how COP processes can more meaningfully embed First Nations leadership and knowledge systems in global climate negotiations.
Key themes include:
•    Protecting our oceans and lands – recognising Indigenous custodianship as integral to holistic climate and biodiversity stewardship.
•    Inclusion in climate action – ensuring First Nations leadership shapes, not supplements, climate policy and practice.
•    Partnering for Paris – modelling respectful, reciprocal relationships between Indigenous and state leadership in achieving the Paris Agreement goals.
The yarning circle format encourages productive discomfort and authentic dialogue across worldviews, foregrounding Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing as central to a just and inclusive climate future, and setting the tone for Australia’s path toward a truly “Ocean COP” at COP31.

MAKING WAVES FROM UNOC TO COP 31 – OCEANS OF COLLABORATION AT COP30
Continuing the conversation from “Collaboration is Key” toward ocean-climate action and equity

Ocean-based climate action is essential to achieving global climate goals. Ocean solutions could contribute up to 35% of the emission reductions needed by 2050, while strengthening resilience, conserving biodiversity, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. As the world moves from the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) earlier this year toward COP30 [on the road to] COP31, this panel explores how equitable, cross-regional partnerships can translate ambition into implementation. Focussing on collaboration between Australia and Pacific nations as a compelling example of cross-regional collaboration, the discussion will highlight mechanisms for shared stewardship, blue governance, and investment that connects climate, communities, and ocean health.
